When it comes to preparing for your adventures on the water, knowing how to line or string a fishing pole is essential. To add line to a spinning rod and reel, follow these step-by-step instructions.
- Open the bail on your fishing pole and place it on a flat surface (wire arm on the reel that lifts up and down). Remove the tag end of the line from the spool and feed it through the guide closest to the reel.
- Close the bail on the reel and tie the line to the centre of the spool or arbour with an arbour knot.
- Pick up the pole and lay the spool of line on the floor in a counter-clockwise direction. Maintain light line tension by pinching the line against the pole or holding it between your fingers as you turn the reel handle. Fill the reel with line until it is about 1/8th of an inch from the edge. To separate the line from the spool, cut it.
- Open your reel’s bail and thread the tag end through the remaining guides. Begin at the closest guide to the handle (the first of the fishing pole string guides) and work your way up through the remaining guides. Leave about three to four feet of line extending down from the end of the rod after pulling the line through the final guide at the tip.
